The App Store rankings have created a powerful dynamic that drives a large divide between the top apps with millions of downloads and the long tail of mostly undiscovered apps. Flurry, a mobile application Analytics provider, released data on the average number of downloads per day a free app can expect to receive if it is ranked in the Top 10.
Incredibly, the top spot in the store can be worth 150,000 – 250,000 downloads a day, while the rest of the top 10 is worth > 20,000 daily. When you consider top apps typically spend a couple days ranked highly, you can see how it is possible for your app to receive a couple hundred thousand downloads in a week.

Flurry states that the data in the Smartphone Reports is computed from 200 applications, 25 million consumers and a sampling across the Apple, Blackberry, JaveME, and Android platforms, although this report includes only data from Apple developers.
